Having initially worked in research pharmacology, Professor Engelman has the unique interdisciplinary background of science and law required to serve as a comprehensive Patent counsel in the United Kingdom Patent Office through to the Court . He specialises in understanding the complex technical features of an invention and the prior art behind them, along with all pertaining legalistic concerns.

Working closely with companies, Engelman can advise on a broad range of issues regarding patent law, such as intellectual property rights for innovations and developments, portfolio management, and licensing. Representing the client throughout the process, from representation before patent offices to prosecution of applications, is an important aspect of patent law. For example, his 6-year High Court dispute: Professor Geoffrey Goldspink v (1) University College London  (2) UCL Business Plc concerned a breach of the global exploitation agreement of Mechano Growth Factor, a valuable tissue growth factor.
